"There's no words, there's no words. It's just heartbreaking. It's something that's not supposed to happen," says Adam Eldridge.
Eldridge is in his first year as administrator here at Lakeside Christian Academy in Morehead. He says nothing could have prepared him for the violent death of one of his preschool students. Four-year-old Abby Volk and her mother, Rebecca were involved in a wreck yesterday in Magoffin County. Rebecca was driving along 460 when investigators say her car dropped off the side of the road, then slammed into a van when she over-corrected. Rebecca was treated and released from a hospital, but Abby was killed. Today, staff and classmates drew pictures and signed a large card for the Volk family.
"She was the happiest little girl. I never saw her when there wasn't a smile on her face. She was always singing and she was a joy for teachers to have here," says Eldridge.
Eldridge says the tragedy is hitting him especially hard because he's a longtime friend of the family.
"I lived in Paintsville for a while where I met Doug. He was actually in my youth group there in Paintsville, so when they moved to Morehead we reconnected. I have a little girl that's the same age as Abby. As Reese would say, she was her best friend," says Eldridge.
Today, there were grief counselors and pastors for the students. Eldridge says they're beginning to plan a memorial for Abby. The Volk family has requested that donations be made to the Crosspoint Christian Church building fund in lieu of flowers.
