NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - It is a tragedy that many are struggling to grasp. Six people died last night in a head-on crash on U.S. 27 in Nicholasville. A father, mother and three children are among those killed in the crash.
Police officers told us this was one of the worst wrecks they had ever seen. Even the press release they put out on this crash called it horrific.
The mother of one of the people involved says it's destroyed their family.
Shortly after learning her son, daughter in law, and three grandchildren had been killed Sabra Taylor spoke to WKYT.
"I just had left them a couple hours before this happened," said Sabra Taylor.
The crash that killed the family of five also killed a person in a second vehicle.
Nicholasville Police say Steven and Shaila Hibbard were driving north with their three children, James Phillips, and Alyssa and Kylee Hibbard. Around 9:15 p.m. their station wagon crossed over the median and hit a passenger van with five people in it head on.
"I just can't explain how devastating this is to me and my family," said Taylor. "I ask everybody to never take for granted your loved ones because you can see them one minute and lose them the next."
The accident reconstruction closed the road for hours. Police still don't know what cause the crash.
The coroner is waiting to release the identity of the sixth person killed, pending a positive identification. Four other people in that van were taken to the hospital.
Taylor has opened an account at central bank to help pay for the funeral expenses of her family.
"We have five of them to bury and we had no life insurance on any of them so we're asking for the public and his friends help," said Taylor.
Seven year old James Phillips went to Rosenwald Dunbar Elementary school. The Jessamine County Superintendent tells us that while school is out, they do have counselors available should any students or teachers need them.
According to their Facebook page, the van in that crash belonged to Refuge for Women.
The group helps women who are leaving the sex industry. The post says one of their members was killed
