Imagine being born into a world where no one gave you a chance, you were told you wouldn't amount to anything?
In some cases people with disabilities face that challenge daily, but some choose to focus on proving those folks wrong.
In the spirit of the season Amber Philpott shares the story of a woman overcoming the odds and inspiring others with handmade Christmas cards.
A creative mind, some paper and the push of a button is all it takes for Dawn Cooper to get to work making her next Christmas card.
Her creativity is drawn from a higher power, "The Lord inspires me more than anything in the world," says Dawn Cooper.
Faith has helped Dawn through out a difficult life, a life that she almost lost.
"Basically they were like stick a fork in her she's done, she's not going to be able to do anything ever again. They told me I would never be able to walk again, never work, never be on my own again," said Cooper.
In 1993 Dawn suffered a traumatic brain injury after a multi-car accident on a Dallas, Texas expressway.
"I was dead on arrival, two brain surgeries and one pelvic surgery," said Cooper.
18 years later she's proving all those naysayers wrong.
She has her own business called i Touch Greeting Cards and was even the inspiration for Lords Legacy Ministries in Nicholasville.
Jeanene Mader is Dawn's adoptive mother, the two met three years after Dawn's accident.
In watching Dawn's struggles, Mader realized there was a need to help others not only understand those with disabilities and their challenges, but to embrace them.
"I would like to see more folks in the community to get more involved and my hope is that they can become more educated," said Jeanene Mader.
She started Lords Legacy in 2007 where people with born disabilities or acquired ones like Dawn are all treated the same and given the opportunity to succeed in life.
Many receive training to eventually hold a job of their own, just like Dawn.
And business is booming, this time of year is a busy one for i Touch Greeting Cards.
With support and love Dawn is now able to focus on making others happy.
"I picked greeting cards because it makes people happy, it helps them explain things they need to explain," said Dawn.
And Dawn is doing it one hand crafted card at a time.
Lord's Legacy Life Ministries provides residential supports, community living supports and adult day training supports to those in need.
