Dog found in dumpster, officers search for clues

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - We're tracking the investigation into a shocking discovery at a Central Kentucky apartment complex.

Jessamine County Animal Control Officers tell us someone found a badly injured chihuahua mix inside a dumpster. Now they think it could be a case of animal cruelty.

She's not what you expect to see when you take out the trash.

"My wife was walking to the dumpster," began Calvin King, a resident of Helsmdale Apartments off Wichita Drive in Nicholasville.

"It was just laying there. Then it raised its head up and looked at me and I thought it was a toy dog."

The sorry sight of a real, suffering dog was one Calvin King couldn't ignore.

"I didn't think that dog was gonna make it, no. I thought it was gonna die right there. I thought it was gonna die in the dumpster."

King called over his neighbors, Josie Dailey and Julie Proctor.

"It had some sort of infection and it was like green and brown and the smell just would knock you down," explained Josie Dailey,"we're talking about foot long and then gashes on her back."

"I think it's disgusting that anybody could be that heartless, to just throw it in the dumpster like it's trash," said neighbor Julie Proctor. Proctor told WKYT animal control officers took the dog to a nearby animal hospital. Now those same officers are trying to figure out who owns her.

"It makes me mad, not so much helpless as angry because all they had to do was go to the Humane Society, they'll take her. Even some of your pet stores will take them," noted Dailey.

Animal control officers are hoping someone recognizes the older chihuahua mix and helps them figure out what happened.

Animal Control officers think the puncture wounds on the dog might be from an animal attack.
