December Programs at the Explorium!

Help us celebrate the New Year!  The Explorium will be open FREE on New Year’s Day!  We will be open our regular hours 10-5.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  (One adult for every three children.)

Explorium will be open on New Year’s Eve 10-5.

Martin Luther King Day –

Curiosity Club- January 5, 10:00 am - noon Exercise your curiosity at our brand new curiosity club, created exclusively for Explorium members! Together we will test experiments & projects the first Saturday of every month!  Reservations required 258-3253 or explore@explorium.com.  Free for Explorium members. 

Programming for the month of January will focus on nutrition and health.  We will help keep the popular New Year’s resolutions!

Children and adults enjoy our monthly programs.

Open Art Studio  - Tuesday-Sunday 1-5                              Free with general admission

December 30 – January 5: Dancing Fingers - Instead of painting music with a brush, let’s use our fingers and hands to create art by listening to music!  Can you make your hands dance?

January 6-12: Tracing Bodies – children will lay down on BIG pieces of paper to trace and color their bodies.

January 13-19: Senses Books - We’ll put together a sketch book to explore our five senses!

January 20-26: Body Flip Book - Make a wacky flip book that you can mix and match outfits and body parts!

January 27 – February 2 - Silver Leaf - Draw a cool picture and then add silver to certain parts of the image.  Finish it off by painting around the silver pieces!

Lil Bookworm Club

Ages: Pre-K – 6          Tuesdays 10:30-11:15             Free with general admission

January 1: Join our energetic elephant team as we start the new year off right with a fun introduction to yoga as we read “Babar’s Yoga for Elephants”.

January 8: Find out what happens to the “Very Hungry Caterpillar” when he eats too much junk food in this Eric Carle classic!

January 15: Learn about the different bones and their functions in “Skeleton Hiccups,” by Margery Cuyler!

January 22: Find out how important exercise really is as we follow Murphy the dog on his healthy expedition in “Murphy Meets the Treadmill,”, by Harriet Zeifert!

January 29: Rainforests are incredible ecosystems full of beautiful animals and plants. Let’s explore under the canopy of leaves in “The Rainforest Grew All Around,” by Susan K. Mitchell!

Baby Explorers

Ages 9 mo. - 2 years   Tuesdays 10:30-11:15             Free with general admission

January 1: Painted Snowmen! - The holiday season is over, but winter isn’t! Join us for culinary colors as we paint edible snowmen, read stories and explore our world!

This session is designed to develop early literacy, eye and hand coordination, shape grouping, construction, and seasonal recognition.

January 8: Birds on the Loose! - In this class we’ll take to the skys! Make your own soft and fuzzy bird craft and enjoy storytime with the storyteller!

This session is designed to explore texture, color, and animal recognition.

January 15: Bake-able Counting - Let’s practice counting by decorating our cookies to take home and bake. From colors to counting we’ll make a take-home activity and read “If you Give A Mouse a Cookie.”

This session is designed to practice counting, shapes, and color grouping.

January 22 - Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes - Up, down, all around! Where’s your head, and where’s your toes? Explore the human body in this fun activity, and story-time. Fix your Robot so he has his own head, shoulders, knees and toes just like you!

This session is designed to recognize body parts, function, and shapes.

January 29 - Run-Away-Rainbow Day - The rainbow has dropped from the sky! Join us for story time and a colorful activity where we catch the rainbow on paper! Don’t let it get away!

This session is designed to practice eye and hand coordination, color theory, and fine motor skills.

Mother’s Day Out

3-6 years (must be potty trained) Wednesdays 9:00-12:00    $12 Members; $15 Non-Members

January 2, 9, 16, 23, 30: Moms, Dads, caregivers drop your precious ones with us and run your errands, go to the gym…or take nap!   During this time, kids will play games, do crafts, enjoy the Explorium and have a good time.  Children should bring a snack.

December 12: Edible Holiday House- Who says you need gingerbread for a holiday edible home? Join us as we use various bakery treats to make our own edible holiday homes!

December 26: Treasure Boxing- Get creative in this hands- on creation of your very own treasure box!

December 5: CSI Crime Lab- Uh oh, the Explorium needs your help! Learn how real detectives solve crimes using tools like fingerprint kits and blacklights! Can you help us solve our crime?

December 19: Super Science- For creative thinkers and problem solvers! Join us for unbelievable science experiments in the kitchen!

Mini Da Vinci’s

Ages 2–4 years                        Thursdays 10:30-11:30           Free with general admission

December 6: Painting with Flowers- Let’s bring a little spring to the month of December and use fake flowers as paint brushes!

December 13: Pasta Art- Create a picture using only colored pasta and glue!

December 20: Cotton Ball Snow Day- Draw your house or a park with crayons or markers. How can you turn this picture into a snowy day using cotton balls?

December 27: Cereal Bracelets- String cereal on a pipe cleaner that you can wear around your wrist and also use as a snack!

Imagination Station – sponsored by Rotary Club of Lexington

Ages: K-5        Saturday 11:00-12:00 & 1:00-2:00                 Free with general admission

December 1: Blundery Bliss- It’s that time again…Instant Snow is back! Watch as we turn powder into snow right before your eyes!

December 8: Cloud Dough- Is it playdough, or is it something better? Come make your very own moldable dough that you can take home for hours of continued fun!

December 15: Tea Party- Tea parties aren’t just for ladies! Today we will revisit the events of the Boston Tea Party by dumping our own tea into the harbor the Explorium way…with a catapult!

December 22: Hugs for the Holidays- Sometimes the best gifts in life are free. Learn how to turn a hug into something you can send to far away loved ones!
