An 11-week-old baby is recovering here at UK Hospital this afternoon as his father sits in jail. Police say Eric Arthur is responsible for his young son's severe head injuries.
People who live on Longview Drive in Nicholasville were shocked to hear the details of what police say Eric Arthur did to his son.
"What makes people think like that? I couldn't imagine as a father how a father could do something like that to a child," says John McCubbins.
Nicholasville Police say 24-year-old Eric Arthur shook the young boy while he was crying, causing retinal hemorrhaging and bleeding on the brain. Detectives were called to UK Hospital to investigate after doctors thought the boy's head injuries were suspicious. Arthur was arrested and charged with first degree assault, domestic violence last night. John McCubbins lives just a few houses down from where the assault allegedly took place.
"That's what sickens me, as a father. Just knowing that I live that close to someone that's like that," he says.
He says he understands that young children can cause stress, but doesn't understand violence toward them.
"They're children. They don't realize. A child that young that had been shaken...that's terrible. I mean what could that child possibly do to deserve something like that? I just think it's very sad," says McCubbins.
Arthur was arraigned this morning in Jessamine County. He pleaded not guilty to the assault charge. He'll be in court again on April 23.
