Neighbors' hearts dropped when they heard the news. A 12-year-old girl fell off a cliff, 30 to 40 feet down into a dry creek bed off Newman Road.
"We were just sick. Our neighborhood's very very tight and we just - all of us - came rushing down to see if there was anything we could do," said neighbor Claudia Isenhour.
Jessamine County Fire were the first to go to the home on Newman Road. Behind the house, in a heavily wooded area, they say a group of friends were hiking.
"Hiking in the woods and just got too close to the edge. It's kinda wet. The creek bed was dry for the most part, but there was some slick, mossy, wet areas that they encountered in their walk," said Jessamine County Fire Chief Michael Rupard.
First responders spent about half an hour finding the girl, and another hour getting her out of the creek bed. They used ropes and pulleys to rescue her. A crew flew her straight to UK Hospital with serious injuries.
"Whenever I asked her a question she did respond to it, but obviously it's pretty serious," said Chief Rupard.
Friends say the 12-year-old, Lily Henderson, broke her back in the fall. She is out of ICU at UK, but still recovering in the hospital.
