Flooded Nicholasville community braces for more rain

JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Heavy rains flooded streets and homes on Brookview Drive in Nicholasville this weekend.

Monday morning, many people living in the neighborhood worked to clean up the damage, but with more rain on the way they are worried this won't be the last of it.

David Oaks tells us after a few hours of heavy rain Sunday, the small creek behind his house swelled until it was about 200 feet wide and nearly six feet deep in places.

While his yard no longer looks like a pond, he says all it takes for it to flood again is another hard rain.

Oaks tells us this is the fifth time flood waters have filled the neighborhood in the past 20 years.

According to the city, they are planning to build a retention dam to alleviate the flooding problem but they tell us it may not be completed until the fall.

Oaks says for now, all he can do is sort his belongings from the mud and hope Mother Nature gives his neighborhood a break.

"It's just havoc, it really was havoc. You try so hard to get everything fixed the way you want it and then something like this comes along," he said.

He says he doesn't have flood insurance, so he is looking at up to $4,000 of damage.
