NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) Nicholasville Police continue to search for the person who is responsible for shooting a man in the neck.
Flashing blue lights and the sound of sirens ripped through the 200 block of Rebel Road early Sunday morning, serving as an unusual wake up call for folks living nearby.
“I looked out the window and I saw police cars up and down the street,” said Christina Peel. Peel lives in an apartment complex a few yards away from where the shooting took place.
When officers arrived at the scene, they say the shooting victim was lying in the road.
“We were asleep but my daughter’s room is upstairs so she woke us up. I walked outside and saw a bunch of people over there and a cop car,” said Brandon Lairson, who also lives nearby.
“My neighbor across the street said she heard a popping noise around 1:00 a.m.,” Peel told us Sunday.
It wasn't long before neighbors learned that popping noise was a gunshot fired by an unknown person and ended up hitting a man in the neck.
Some neighbors say they saw the victim lying on the sidewalk after he was shot but they say he wasn't living in the nearby apartment complex. They also say they’re not sure why he was walking on that stretch of roadway so late at night.
The seemingly random shooting has made some neighbors uneasy, especially since police are still searching for the shooter.
“It makes you feel that you want to be on the lookout a little bit more and see who is walking around and be careful,” Peel said.
They tell us they're not used to such violence in their typically quiet neighborhood.
“It can happen anywhere I guess. I just thank God that we're okay and I hope that he's okay,” Lairson told us.
Nicholasville Police tell us the victim is currently in critical condition at UK Hospital. They are not releasing the victim’s name at this time.
