TEDxLex goes to Doha, Qatar
TEDxLex co-organizer, Michelle Lowe will head to Doha, Qatar in 2 weeks to represent Lexington, Kentucky. As co-organizer of the TEDxLex event, which was held at the Kentucky Theatre last October, Michelle was invited to attend the first annual TEDxSummit, a week long event exclusively for TEDx organizers from around the world. Hosted by the Doha Film Institute (DFI), the inaugural event will gather TEDx organizers for a week of workshops, talks and cultural activities. Organizers will also meet, share ideas, collaborate and brainstorm with one another. Top TED and TEDx speakers from across the globe will give talks throughout the course of the week. The event will be held April 16-21.
“I am very excited about this opportunity. For starters, to collaborate with folks from around the globe – and to represent Lexington, Kentucky is mind boggling to me! There will be organizers from 160 countries. TED has been around since 1986 and I have noticed that not a lot of folks in our area are familiar with TED or TEDx. I hope to be able to change that. I am planning on coming back reenergized and inspired with fresh ideas on how to expand on this year’s TEDxLex event. The individuals involved with TEDx have a passion for turning challenges into opportunity with the hope of inspiring the next generation. The belief is that the power of ideas can change attitudes, lives, and ultimately, the world. To be a part of something so inspiring and to bring those ideas back to our local community just makes it surreal for me. Plus, I am really excited to be submersed and learn more about the culture of Qatar! Thanks to Lauren Campbell at the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau – I have 500 of the local blue horses (stickers, that is) to pass around to the world!
Kent Lewis hosted and curated the first TEDxLex event at Buster’s in April 2010 alone and he and Michelle teamed up for the second event last October at the Kentucky Theatre. This year’s event is scheduled to be held on Friday, October 21, 2012. For more information on TEDxSummit – visit http://tedxsummit.ted.com/ or for TEDxLex visit www.tedxlex.com.
