PERRY Co., Ky. (WYMT) - Dr. William Hagans is a veterinarian at the Appalachian Animal Hospital in Hazard.

Dr. Hagans said animal cruelty is a reality in our region.

For the seventh straight year, Kentucky has been rated as the worst state for animal abuse by the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

Veterinarians in Perry County said one recent shooting involving a pit bull terrier mix from Cornettsville is a reminder that we should not tolerate this senseless, careless, and cruel behavior.

"In the back of your mind you wonder how someone could do something like this to a dog that was as nice and sweet as this dog appeared to be," said Dr. Hagans.

He said the dog was shot.

"The dog had multiple puncture wounds, a missing lower jaw, and there was also a large puncture wound on her chest," Dr. Hagans said.

Sadly he has seen quite a few dogs in similar conditions.

"They will say that neighbors shot it and a lot of times they may very well know that they had shot it, but there's no proof," he said. "That really where the problem lies."

There was not much they could do for the two-year-old animal and Dr. Hagans said she was euthanized.

He said, "Primarily because of the long term quality of life. It would be unable to eat and the wounds looked like they were days to possibly a week old."

Their attention has turned to finding who did this.

"Then at that point the message will be if you do crimes of this nature you will be punished for it," said Dr. Hagans.

Officials at the Kentucky River Regional Animal Shelter are offering a $1,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot the dog.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Jerry Burns at the Perry County Sheriff’s Department at 606-439-1113.
