HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) UPDATE: September 30, 2013

A group raising money for one Eastern Kentucky football coach battling Leukemia are calling a recent benefit a big success!

Event organizers tell us they raised more than $2,100 Sunday at their Walk, Ride and Drive Benefit.

That's more than double their original goal!

The money is to help offset Hazard High School Assistant Football Coach Chuck Fugate's medical bills.

For some, there is a certain stigma that comes with all the chrome, leather and boots of a biker.

But if you ask Richard Burton, their stigma is anything but.

“I mean, you can ride a bike and still have the biggest heart as anyone,” Burton said.

The group is raising money for Hazard High School Assistant Football Coach Chuck Fugate who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia.

The money will go to help offset his medical bills.

“Times are hard now and you don’t get that a whole lot. But here in Southeastern Kentucky, people come together. They come together for a cause,” Burton added.

The group isn’t just rallying around Fugate, but bringing awareness to a disease that effects hundreds ever year.

“I have my daughter here today, I wanted her to be a part of it. She’s a cheerleader at Hazard High School. She knows coach very well. She’s proud to do this and maybe she can carry on the tradition,” Tim Embry said.

As they support a man who has dedicated his life to supporting many of Hazard’s own.

The ride ended at Hazard High School, where people also held a walk for Fugate.
