HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) It was the first day of school for students and teachers across Perry County, and an even bigger day for those at East Perry Elementary School.
“I think the first day of school is all I’m excited about,” 2nd Grader Tanika Mounce said.
“I’m so excited I’m going to get to play on my new playground and be back with my friends,” 3rd Grader Midison Little added.
“I think the floor is my favorite part,” Parent Janet McReynolds said.
As parents stocked up on pencils and glue, some wondered if this day would even come.
“Even the staff wondered at times, if they were really going to get this [done], but they pulled through,” Teacher Jennifer Banks said.
“Even though there’s probably more kids in every room because they’re combining three schools, it doesn’t feel as cramped as it might be,” McReynolds added.
And now, the teachers at East Perry are doing what they know best, easting the nerves of not just students, but parents too.
“I’m thrilled that everything is finally settled and we’re started to get into the swing of things, so I think that’s what everyone’s been waiting for,” Banks said.
And a great start for a new school year in a brand new building.
More than 700 students are enrolled at East Perry Elementary school, making it the largest school in the district.
