HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Few answers but many questions remain as a Perry County murder case gets colder. It has been five years since Marion Estep was found dead in his car along the Hal Rogers Parkway, near Exit 56. The family says the last five years have been painful, but they have made peace with the tragedy.

Joseph Engle remembers his grandfather as a generous and loving man who had served in ministry for more than 50 years.

"He never did have much of his own you know, material or wealth ... but what he did have he would give to people his last dollar, his last dime ... you know try to help people out that were a little bit less fortunate than he was," he said.

Engle says he never expected anyone would want to harm his grandfather, but on January 10th, 2008, police found Marion Estep shot several times in his car near Exit 56 along the Hal Rogers Parkway. He died later at Hazard A-R-H Hospital. Although investigators continue to follow leads in the case, no arrests have ever been made.

"You don't ever get used to it," Engle said. "You deal with death and things like that all the time, but when it's your own family like that, it really brings it close to home."

Sad as it all was, Engle says he does not spend a lot of time thinking about who may have killed his grandfather. He says the family has achieved a measure of peace in the face of this tragedy.

"You know you trust in a higher power, you trust in the Lord, and He's in control, and He was in control that day and He's still in control this day, so we have peace with it. The family's fine with it and we know we'll see him again," he said.

Engle says he does not think the case will ever be solved. He says he will honor his grandfather by carrying on the ideals Estep spent his life championing.

The Perry County Sheriff's Office still considers this to be an open investigation. Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call 606-439-4523.
