HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - A local organization that helps people with affordable housing was recognized by the Kentucky Housing Corporation.
The Housing Development Alliance in Hazard won the 2012 Nonprofit Affordable Housing Builder Award.
Last year, the organization built 20 new homes, and they say this year they are planning to build more.
The HDA helps those like Lois Morgan who used to live in a small, one bedroom apartment.
She says there is not way she could have bought a home without HDA.
"I can't thank them enough," Morgan said.
Director Scott McReynolds says each house only takes about two weeks to build. He says they plan on building 24 homes this year.
"Times have been really hard in housing, and because of all the hard work of the staff and the volunteers in our community, we've actually been able to expand and do more," said McReynolds.
He says the HDA does more than just build houses, they are also investing in the economy.
He says HDA has helped more than 500 families since 1993.
