Local marching band heads to state championship

After months of hard work, preparation and dedication the season comes to an end this weekend for many Kentucky high school marching bands.

The Hazard Band of Gold will be among 80 bands competing in the semi-finals of the state marching band championship.

With only 27 members, Hazard's band will be one of the smallest groups to compete in Bowling Green.

“I think the main thing is finding out that they've got better in them then what they think. The thing about marching band is that people think it’s about winning trophies but it’s not. It’s about the journey that they go on,” said Pauletta Smith, the band’s director.

The top four bands from each of the five classes will advance to the finals Saturday night at Western Kentucky University.

Bands in our region competing in Class A along with Hazard are Pineville and Harlan.

Morgan County and Wayne County are in Class AA.

Class AAA includes Rockcastle, Estill, Powell and Rowan counties, along with Corbin.

North Laurel is competing in Class AAAAA.
