Unusually warm weather is part of the reason for layoffs at a Perry County mine.

Around 85 employees of TECO Coal's Perry County mine found out Friday they no longer have jobs.

Officials made the announcement to the employees Friday morning.

Paul Matney, Director of Personnel at TECO Coal, says he hopes the layoffs are temporary.

Matney says there were several reasons that led the company to make this tough decision. The down economy, low natural gas prices and unusually mild temperatures all played a part.

He says the demand for coal has also dried up, and right now it is hard to find contracts to sell additional coal.

"This is not something that we enjoy. All of our employees that are affected have families," said Matney.

Matney says he is praying the layoffs are short and that employees can come back to work soon.
