HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A Perry County restaurant was vandalized and burglarized Thursday night.
There was no one coming or going, and no pizzas being carried out of Papa John’s for lunch Friday.
No orders were coming in because someone cut the phone lines before they broke into the Papa John's in Hazard overnight.
“There was no one here. Everyone was gone last night. My opener came in and discovered it and she just stopped and called police,” said Director of Operations Scott Wiley.
Police said the safe was stolen from the restaurant.
It had nearly 400 dollars inside.
“They went straight to the safe, which is a small safe, which wouldn't take much to get it out of the store and into the back of a truck or something,” said Deputy Sheriff Ruey Couch.
The handle and lock on the back door was broken in order to break in but officials said they will be taking extra precautions to make sure their employees are safe.
“I think we will, by the time we get done with our repairs and upgrades I think it’ll be much safer,” said Wiley.
Officials said safety was their biggest concern.
“I don't want anything to ever happen to my people, you know they're always at the top of Papa John's priority list,” said Wiley.
Police said the business is not the only one being burglarized this time of year.
“There's thefts all over the city and the county now. Once it gets around Christmas they will increase,” said Couch.
A trend Papa John's officials hope do not affect them again.
