PERRY Co., Ky. (WYMT) - Preying on the elderly. Troopers at Kentucky State Police Post 13 said this is exactly what is going on.
"The homeowner might write a check for $400 and the scammer may cash it for $4,000," Trooper Jody Sims said. "That's just an example of what's happening."
Sims said scammers are posing as home repair and power company employees. These individuals are altering checks, inflating prices for little or no work at all, and even stealing checks from victims.
He said whoever is doing this is taking advantage of the elderly.
"It's sad, but a lot of times individuals of this nature target the elderly as someone who might be in need of this type of work," said Sims.
In Breathitt County Sims said there is one confirmed case and one pending complaint. There are similar calls coming from Knott, Letcher, and Perry County.
"The one in Breathitt County is currently the only one that Post 13 is investigating," Sims said.
Troopers said always use discretion before allowing anyone to do work at your home.
Investigators are encouraging homeowners to be on alert as they work hard to find whoever is responsible.
They also said this scam possibly involves two men and one woman, but there could be more people.
