HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - The Rape Crisis Center in Hazard has a new name. It's now called The Rising Center.
Officials held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the move. Hazard Mayor Nan Gorman did the honors.
While the name is changing, officials say the center will still provide the same sexual assault services, including medical and legal advocacy, crisis counseling, and long-term therapy.
They say the new name reflects the work they do at the center.
"Rape crisis center, that really reflects more of the trauma that happens out there in the world, but it doesn't say anything about what happens when victims come through this door and that healing process," said Jill Martin, program facilitator at the center.
Officials say sexual assault entails more than just rape, and happens more often than most people realize.
The Rising Center offers services to anyone dealing with trauma from sexual assault, even if the assault is not recent.
The ribbon cutting is in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month. You can find more information on that at http://www.krccnet.com/
The Rising Center is part of a network of 13 sexual assault crisis centers statewide.
