LESLIE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) UPDATE 6-1-14:

Five-year-old Kyra Smith continues the fight of her young life, undergoing chemotherapy for an inoperable brain tumor.

Her family first learned of her condition in March, and since then her mother has worked to raise money for her daughter's medical bills, as well as those of two other Leslie County kids battling serious illnesses.

"We got this," read t-shirts for Team Kyra. That mantra is what family and friends are clinging to as they rally around Kyra Smith.

"Kyra's doing OK," said her mother Amanda Smith. "Her blood count is a little low. Her white blood count is low. We've been keeping her home; the last two weeks she did get sick with the chemo."

For the past several weeks, Kyra has undergone chemo treatments at a Lexington clinic.

She's due for an MRI in a few weeks to see if the treatment is working.

To help with the expense of all those miles on the road, her mom asked folks to send in cards stuffed with one dollar bills.

The owners of El Azul Grande in Hazard took it a step further, agreeing to donate 10 percent of Sunday's profits to Team Kyra.

"I know it's hard, so it's a little we can do, so anything helps," said restaurant manager Jamie Torres.

Kyra's mom says she is amazed by the generosity of those that have helped her daughter.

"Without the prayers, I couldn't be doing this today. People's praying for my baby, praying for my family, giving us encouragement," she said.

Smith says that support is what is keeping her family smiling.

UPDATE:

Sunday we told you how folks are helping three sick Leslie County youngsters by sending them get well cards with one dollar bills stuffed inside.

Now, workers at a Hazard business are teaming up to give the fundraiser a big boost.

Officials with Whayne Supply in Hazard asked 100 workers to donate three dollars, with the goal of raising at least 100 dollars for each child.

Leslie County kids Pada Adams, Kyra Smith, and Tyler Wooton are all battling serious illnesses.

Executives with Whayne Supply say they learned about the card fundraiser through a WYMT news report and decided to help.

"So far the employees we've contacted, none of them has said no," said Whayne Supply Vice President - Branch Operations Manager Tim Embry. "We've had everyone participate. One employee handed us fifty dollars already, and we think we can do better than that, so we just want to put a smile on these kids' faces."

Embry says one employee is raising money with an auction for a dog.

The pup will be sold to the highest bidder on Friday.

Folks at Whayne Supply say they will keep collecting money for the kids until May 30th.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Within the last couple of months, three kids from Leslie County have learned they are sick.

Pada Adams, Kyra Smith, and Tyler Wooton are all battling serious illnesses.

Kyra Smith is five and receiving treatment for a brain tumor.

Her mother, Amanda, came up with the idea to raise money for the kids via the mail.

"These are cards that people are sending to us from all over the United States," said Amanda, "Each card has a dollar."

Amanda says the money she's received in the cards goes toward fun things for Kyra, who has been getting weekly chemo treatments in Lexington.

"Kyra's been through so much," said Amanda, "and the community has been helping us with other expenses and stuff so I wanted this to be for Kyra."

And though her treatments have been painful, Amanda says her daughter is tough and perks up whenever she gets another surprise in the mailbox.

The fundraiser is just one more connection between the children fighting tough battles, and says they hope to meet up one day.

"Kyra's hair is starting to come out," said Amanda, "And once it comes out she says she wants to be beautiful like Pada.

So far, the Smith's have received a little over 100 cards. Their ultimate goal is to get 1,000 cards for each of the three Leslie kids.
