Snow days hamper Perry County school system

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - The winter weather makes life harder for many people in Eastern Kentucky, including students, teachers and school administrators.

Students and teachers in Perry County have been to school just two days in 2014.

"It's tough on teachers, it's tough on students, and I'm sure it's tough on parents, as well," Perry County Schools Superintendent Jonathan Jett said. "They have to make arrangements for child care and make sure their children are taken care of at home while they're at work. It's difficult on everybody."

Some students at Perry Central High School have still no taken their final exams from the first semester.

"It's always tough when you've had an extended break," Jett said. "But I'm sure our teachers will be ready to motivate their students and get them focused on specific content that they're teaching to prepare them to be successful."

Perry County school officials have already cancelled spring break and added 21 minutes to the school day.

They are hoping to avoid extending classes into summer.

School has been cancelled Thursday in Perry County.
