Students pay tribute to victims of Sandy Hook Elementary

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Thousands of students in eastern Kentucky paid tribute to the victims of Friday's massacre by wearing green and white to school Monday.

Those are the colors of Sandy Hook Elementary, the site of the shootings.

The shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, happened nearly 800 miles away from Hazard, Kentucky. But students here are remembering the tragedy as if it happened at their school.

“If it was us in that kind of situation, how would they feel? They would feel the same way about us I believe,” Jayden Neace said.

“I think that if they would do it for us then we should be able to do it for them to support all their losses and help the family members,” Chloe Williams said.

Wearing green is a small symbol of their support.

And teachers feel the same way.

“When you have tragedy, whether it's big or small, you need to know that you have people out there to support you. That people are aware of what's going on and I think that's the biggest thing we want those people to know in Connecticut,” Rebecca Watts said.

Dozens of other school officials in eastern Kentucky also encouraged students to wear green Monday.
