Traffic was backed up at the daniel boone plaza intersection off Highway 80 in Hazard for about an hour and a half on Mar. 7.
Officials with the Hazard Fire and Police Departments got a call at around 2 p.m. about an accident involving a coal truck and a small car.
Police said the car was attempting to turn left when it was hit by the coal truck. Witnesses said the driver had attempted to beat the yellow turning light.
Officials said the two people in that car were severely injured and had to be flown to a hospital.
"Due to the nature of the serious injuries we are reconstructing the accident.," said Deputy Chief Joe Engle.
Engle said the person at fault is undetermined at this time. Police have not released the names of anyone involved.
