HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) If you ask Don King, the path addiction leads is a tough one.
“I went to a 30 pack a day, plus a quart of moonshine and a couple bottles of vodka. [I fell] down into a bonfire and [got] up, and didn’t feel a thing,” Don said.
But this story isn’t about Don’s troubles, it’s about his triumphs.
“I remember sitting down with him and having a conversation with him about the choices he had to make,” Director of Community Programs at Corner Haven Community Ministries Jennifer Weeber said.
This week, Don is celebrating one year of sobriety and the goals he’s met along the way: staying clean, enrolling in college and getting his own apartment. He says he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of Corner Haven Community Ministries in Hazard.
“Since then, I’ve been following the rules, doing my chores, making my meetings, working my goals. No matter how many goals you put down, they’ll find some more for you,” Don jokes.
And it’s those goals that have Don looking forward to the future.
“I know what I can lose after all this that I’ve gained. It doesn’t seem like much in one year, but to me, it’s quite a bit,” Don added.
Don also volunteers at Corner Haven Community Ministries. If you’re interested in any of the programs or services Community Ministries offers, click the link attached below.
