PIKE Co., Ky (WYMT) - For their final day of classes, students at Kimper Elementary School in Pike County literally went out with a bang.
Suzanne Preece is one social studies teacher at the school.
Preece organized their 2nd annual Civil War reenactment for students in 5th through 8th grade.
Preece says her goal is to get students away from their desks and onto the battlefield.
Preece says all children do not learn the same way, so getting hands-on experience and playing an active role in their education helps them retain information and gain a better understanding.
Emily Chaney is one of her students and she agrees.
"It's a lot different than just sitting in the classroom and hearing about it. You actually get to experience it and know how they feel about it," says Chaney.
Both students and teachers say they would like for this event to continue growing in years to come.
