PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The Appalachian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has submitted a proposal to take over management of the Pike County Animal Shelter.

The ASPCA issued a contract asking the Pike County Fiscal Court to let them take over.

The group says they can help reduce the number of animals that are euthanized by studying other shelters run by ASPCA groups.

"We'd like to emulate the way those shelters are operating. There's one in kentucky in particular that has a very good record, and there are many all over the country," said ASPCA board member Cathy May Johnson.

They also plan to implement a more aggressive spay and neuter program to reduce the number of animals being brought in.
