PHYLLIS, Ky. (WYMT) - As the season of giving comes to a close, it seems that the season of taking is in full swing at one Pike County Fire Department. Firefighters at the Grapevine Volunteer Fire Department say they are taking more precautions after pieces of their equipment were stolen within the first hours of 2013.
Dean Rowe, Chairman of the Fire Department Board, explains, "We had one of the neighbors call me at about 1:30 and told us he saw somebody come over and get something at the fire department."
The neighbor says he witnessed two subjects taking batteries from one of the engines parked outside and putting them in their car. Rowe says, "We've got 2 batteries missing out of our pumper tanker outside and right now that is the the only thing we know is gone but 2 batteries are gone."
Rowe is thankful the neighbor got a good look at the car, "The neighbor came out by the road and watched the car go by and he saw it to be a little red Neon he believed it to have Virginia tags."
The fire department is taking precautions to make sure this does not happen again as Rowe explains, "They need to know that we've put cameras today on the fire department and we will be watching for them."
