PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The first ever 'Coal Bowl Invitational' was held on the University of Pikeville campus on Saturday.
The academic meet was put on through a partnership between the University of Pikeville, Mullins School, and CEDAR, Inc. Eight schools were represented at the competition.
Jeanne Caudill is in charge of Mullins School's coal study program and says, "As part of my coal study unit we said we were going to have an acedemic meet where all the questions are basked upon knowledge of the coal industry."
Christie Thompson, an academic team coach, explains the meet, "We are asking anything related to the coal industry; vocabulary, spelling, math, arts and humanities, with any music related to coal, geography, things about coal towns, anything coal related is fair game."
The teams first competed in pool play, then a single elimination bracket was formed. Dorton Elementray won the competition.
