College students from throughout the country volunteering in Pike County

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - About thirty college students from throughout the United States are spending their spring break volunteering in the Pike County area this week.

On Tuesday, students from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York built six raised beds at the community garden in Pikeville.

They also planted several blackberry plants.

It is all to help out the nonprofit group, Sustainable Pike County, after they started the community garden last year.

Roger Ford says, "Part of our goal is to develop more of an aggro-business, food systems...to work with people in the community that may not have access to farm-able land and want to grow their own vegetables to sell at the farmer's market or for their own personal use."

Ford says several other groups are traveling to Pike County to volunteer in the coming weeks.
