Pike County officials are taking precautions to keep people safe in the heat.

They are opening cooling centers throughout the county including one at the fire training station in downtown Pikeville.

The centers are open for anyone wanting to take a break from the heat.

They have cold drinks and snacks available and encourage people to use them to avoid heat-related problems.

"it's open for residents. It's open for construction workers who may just need a cool place to eat their lunch. We've got Powerade drinks, and we've got water, and fruit, just some different snacks for them. It's just a way to escape the heat during the next three or four days," said Public Safety Director Paul Maynard.

The Fire Training Station will be open from 10-6 through Sunday.
