We've been warned about it all week, and it seems it has finally arrived. A record breaking heat wave.

So officials in Pike County decided to be proactive and give people a chance for a little extra relief.

"That's the whole idea behind government is to make these centers available and that's one of the things we felt we needed to do," said Carol Napier, Commissioner of Community Services.

They turned county community centers and senior centers into cooling centers.

"Basically for public safety. A lot of people may not have air conditioning or may not have adequate air conditioning," said Doug Tackett, Emergency Management Director.

Officials say people can come and go as they please. They say the centers are simply a way to get a break during the heat of the day.

"We're particularly concerned about the elderly and those with breathing difficulties and children," said Napier.

They are encouraging people to remember safety tips while out in the heat.

"If you're outdoors make sure that you limit your activity. Drink plenty of water and fluid replacement like electrolytes, and don't forget your pets. They need fresh water and shade also," said Tackett.

They say anyone is more than welcome to stop at one of the centers even for just a short break.

The Fire Training Station will be open from 10-6 through Sunday.
