UPDATE 2-27-14; 6:00 p.m.

A frantic night for state troopers in Pike County. Two men are in the hospital following a stabbing and officer involved shooting. It all happened late Wednesday night in the Island Creek community.

Kentucky State Police say the alleged suspect in the stabbing also threatened police with a gun...leading troopers to shoot James "Jim" Sallette.

Officials say it all started when Kentucky State Police responded to an assault complaint on Island Creek Road.

The stabbing victim's brother, James Mullins says, "He had cut Chris from right about here on his mouth all the way up to his ear."

Police say after responding to that stabbing they were called to a shots fired complaint at a home on Right Fork of Island Creek.

Officials say four troopers arrived on scene within minutes of the call from neighbors...when 53-year-old, Sallette, came out on his porch threatening the troopers.

Daniel Price watched the entire event unfold, "He kept coming out of the trailer banging a rifle or shot gun on the side of the trailer yelling and cussing, 'Shoot me! Shoot me! Kill me!' They gave him plenty of warnings and finally they just ended up opening up fire on him."

Officials say after ignoring commands by all four troopers and aiming his weapon at them, the troopers did what they are trained to do...react.

Trooper Shaun Little says, "Where as some people may have days, weeks, months to decide...a trooper has to make a decision within a split second."

Sallette was taken to Pikeville Medical Center, none of the troopers were injured.

Officials say after investigating they discovered Sallette is the man who allegedly stabbed, Chris Mullins.

"They have known each other for quite awhile, they were friends. I don't know what would have triggered anything. Even though they both had been drinking and stuff," says James Mullins. He adds, "I just thank God it wasn't worse than it is."

Sallette now faces first degree assault, along with wanton endangerment of a police officer and other charges.

Sallette's ex-girlfriend says he is currently in critical but stable condition and has gunshot wounds to both legs.

As for the troopers, officials say all four are on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
