Spring ahead and replace smoke detector batteries

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Daylight saving time is a good way to remember to change the batteries in your smoke detector. Fire officials across the country are using the time change as a tool for fire safety.

Fire officials say your clocks are not the only things you should change on Sunday as Pikeville Fire Department Lieutenant Kenneth Forsyth explains, "When time changes, change your battery."

Officials say it is a great time to get in the habit of putting fresh batteries in your smoke detectors twice a year, along with regular checks throughout the year.

An easy way to remember when to check your smoke detectors is to pick out an important date, like a birthday, anniversary, or a holiday. Lieutenant Forsyth explains, "Just pick a day Christmas, Valentine's Day, whatever it is pick a holiday. Test them regularly, clean them out and dust them off."

Officials say it is quick and easy to test smoke detectors and it could be the difference in making it out of a fire safely. Pikeville Firefighter Mitch Case says, "There is a button on most detectors that says silence or hush and also says test. You just push on that button and should hear a beep. If you do not hear that, need to change the batteries and also if you hear a small chirp that would also let you know, need to change the batteries."

The Fire Department says they will help any way they can, whether it is the batteries, as Lieutenant Forsyth explains, "If you don't feel comfortable climbing on a ladder we'd be more than happy to go out and do it."

Also, if you are in need of a smoke detector, fire officials say they can help. Just last week the Pike County Firefighters Association received more than 500 smoke detectors to distribute. All you need to do is contact your local fire department and they will put you on the list.
