ELKHORN CITY, ky. (WYMT) - Thousands of dollars in donations were stolen Saturday, October 8th from a local ministry.

Furniture, clothes, shoes, they're just a few of the donations that did not make it to Kentucky over the weekend.

Surveillance video showed an Iowa couple making a stop at a hotel in Indiana for a rest from driving.

Yet, while they rested, their truck and trailer full of donations were stolen.

“There's so many things that we have lost but it's nothing, nothing to what some of these families have lost, and it was nothing compared to what we could have given Terry, said missionary Connie Merten.

Litghhouse Ministry leader Terry Thacker said they were shocked when they heard the news.

“When we're trying to do good and trying to bless others that someone would take very, very needed items and drive off with them without a thought,” said Thacker.

The Mertens rented a car and still came to Elkhorn City despite their loss.

“She said I'm coming empty handed. And what I said to her was no, your hearts are full you're coming with a heart full of love and that's what matters,” said Thacker.

Merten said the crime made their visit much harder than she expected.

“We were able to see and meet some of the families, and that's what really made me sad because I had packed every one of those boxes and bags, and I knew what was in those, and I knew that we could have met the needs of those families,” said Merten.

Even with the frustration, she said their faith kept them strong.

“Even though this is such a sad horrible thing that has happened somewhere, somehow god will get glory out of this and people will be helped,” said Thacker.

They say they're praying for the thieves that stole from so many.

The story and video have gone viral over the past few days.

The Mertens traveled to Washington DC after their stay in Kentucky, where two senators offered to help.

Lighthouse Ministries welcome any type of donations including clothing, food, and furniture.
