UPDATE: Fatal accident at East Ridge High School

UPDATE 2/6/13 6:00 p.m.

MOUTHCARD, Ky. (WYMT) - They are calling it a freak accident that left the grandmother of an East Ridge High School basketball player dead.

Pike County school officials say they are still in shock.

"Certainly it's pretty alarming and very unfortunate," said Pike County Superintendent Roger Wagner.

Tuesday night seemed the same as many at East Ridge High School, crowds coming and going between two basketball games, until the unthinkable happened. A car carrying the grandparents of an East Ridge basketball player slammed into a gate at the entrance to the school, killing the grandmother, 76-year-old Mona Gail Freeman.

School officials say this is not the first time someone has run into the gate, but they say it is the first time anything this serious has happened on school property.

"It did block the entrance there and there was a second game being played and then after that game the crowd had to be held up," said Wagner.

Many of them stayed inside the gym, standing in circles and holding hands, saying prayers for anyone involved.

Mountain News talked to the East Ridge staff who did not want to go on camera but called the Freemans' family sweet and are sad for the loss.

"Our thoughts and prayers goes out to that family," said Wagner.

State police are investigating the accident. There is no word on what caused the accident.

School staff members say counselors were on hand Wednesday for the students.
