PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Those who knew him describe him as a key player in the coal industry.
Tuesday friends and family said their final goodbyes to David Gooch.
Dozens gathered at the funeral for Gooch, President of Coal Operators and Associates in Pikeville and lobbyist for the coal industry.
"This loss will produce a void that will not easily be filled. I was talking to a fellow lobbyist just yesterday and this person described David Gooch as a giant in their profession," said Rep. Jim Gooch.
They say he had a passion for the coal industry, but he also knew the importance of family and friends.
A handful of Gooch's friends stood up during the service to share some lighthearted memories, and they say those happy stories represent the kind of person he was the best.
"I guess if there is a best friend, I can qualify David for that. I met David about 13 years ago and it just clicked," said John Gabbard, President of the Kentucky Oil and Gas Association.
They say his loss will be felt throughout the commonwealth and throughout the coal industry.
Gooch is survived by his wife Reta, one son and two daughters.
He was 64 years old.
