PIKE Co., Ky. (WYMT) - The amphitheater at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park opened back in 1964. More than 250 productions later Jenny Wiley alumni can be seen on Broadway, television, and around the world.
The theatre is celebrating their 50th anniversary. Designers, directors, and actors said there is no better way to celebrate than opening night at their new venue in Pikeville.
"Well I grew up in this theatre," said Actor Katelyn Webb. "I started here when I was 15 and I've seen it grow and it's exciting because it's moving out to reach new people."
A Second Helping: The Church Basement Ladies Sequel is the first production at the brand new Jenny Wiley Theatre Mainstage in downtown Pikeville. The production runs until July 18.
Those involved said this is about more than performances. This is about entertaining, educating, and enriching our communities through the performing arts.
"I mean there's very little in terms of professional theatre here in Eastern Kentucky," said Actor Paul Glodfelter. "It brings all kinds of culture to this area."
Glodfelter said JWT teaches kids how to work as a team.
"So not only entertaining the people here Eastern Kentucky, but also education which is a very big part of that," Glodfelter said.
They are hoping to attract even more audiences in Eastern Kentucky.
