Kentucky basketball players kick off tour in Pike Co.

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Students throughout Pike County spent time with former wildcat and national champion, Jeff Sheppard, and a player on this year's team, Julius Mays.

Mays and Sheppard kicked off the 'School is Cool' tour at Valley Elementary, the tour then went to Johns Creek Elementary and ended the afternoon at the Mullins School.

Sheppard says, "The biggest fans in the world live in Eastern Kentucky and it is so much fun to bring Kentucky basketball to Eastern Kentucky."

They are bring a simple but important message to the kids of Eastern Kentucky. Mays explains, "As a kid all I thought about was basketball, basketball, basketball, and as you get older, you learn not everybody makes it to the NBA, NFL, professional sports...but your education is always there and you should take full advantage of it."

Student, Dennison Lowe, says he looks up to Mays and appreciates the message, "Stay in school, good behavior, make good grades, try hard on and off the court."

Mays says he knows school is not always fun, but having discipline and perserverance to continue on is worth it, and it is something he has shown both in the classroom as he pursues his masters degree and on the court as the Kentucky Wildcat's soft spoken leader and motivator.

Sheppard says they are still finalizing the schedule but they will be coming back to many other schools in Eastern Kentucky.
