PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - It has been sitting empty for seven years and vandalized repeatedly.

Now officials say the old Turkey Creek Grade School building has been intentionally set on fire twice in the past week and at least seven times in three years.

They say it has gone way too far.

"It's just so frustrating to see something like this go down when it could have so many different purposes up here," said Cecil Beckett, Turkey Creek Volunteer Fireman.

The Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department has been called to the old grade school building several times in the past few years and twice in the past week.

The first time was Saturday, when firemen say someone set brush and insulation on fire inside the school.

The next time was Wednesday, when they arrived to find the stage in the cafeteria blazing.

"Probably over the course of three years I can think of about seven or eight times that we've had to respond up here for a call of this nature," said Beckett.

People living near the school say the way it is being vandalized scares them.

"It does make me nervous to know there's been fires there because it puts everybody in danger that's around it," said Connie Jones.

Officials say the fires are not the only major problem in the building.

They say thieves have come in and cut out the metal support beams where the windows used to be.

They say they are afraid it will not be long before what is left of the building collapses.

"We're going to get called up here for a rescue to have to uncover somebody where part of the building has collapsed on them," said Beckett.

Neighbors think the building needs to go.

"If they're not going to fix it up and do something with it, tear it down because it shouldn't be sitting there to be used the way it's being used," said Jones.

Firemen say they expect this will not be the last time they are called to the school.

Officials say there used to be gates to try to keep people off the property, but those have been taken too.
