PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Officials in Pikeville say contracts have been finalized for a new shopping center that will have dozens of stores and offer hundreds of new jobs.
It is being called Pikeville Commons and could be here by the end of next year.
It is a huge project that has been years in the making.
"This is not only about doing a great development plan. This is also about attracting the national brands and becoming the destination center for shopping," said Pikeville City Manager Donovan Blackburn.
It will include 24 new stores, many of which have already been signed to major national retailers.
"55,000 square foot craft store, a 24,000 square foot retailer. You have a 20,000 square foot apparel store. You have a 10,000 square foot shoe store," said Blackburn.
While they cannot disclose those store names yet, they say the development website discloses what kinds of stores they will be and which stores the developers work closely with.
"You're going to see a lot of those national brands that you'll recognize, so that will kind of tell you some of the story," said Blackburn.
They recently added a new feature to the development.
"There is also one major demand that we haven't been able to fulfill. We've done a little but dabbling here and there and that's housing, affordable housing," said Blackburn.
The developer has drawn up plans to put at least 58 apartments above the stores.
And of course there will be new jobs, hundreds of them.
"It will also mean 600 new jobs at a time when we need jobs," said Pikeville City Commissioner Barry Chaney.
Officials say the benefits are plentiful.
"The more people you have coming into your area, the more they see what you have to offer, see the value of the local economy, and keep coming back," said Chaney.
They expect to break ground on the project by April and hope to have it completed by next year's holiday shopping season.
