PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - When most people think of Thanksgiving they think of spending time with family, but for many people at the homeless shelter in Pikeville that is not an option.

This Thanksgiving there was no shortage of food and laughter at Westcare Homeless Shelter.

"Just getting everything ready. It's been one day at a time around here," said Westcare employee Thomas Olcott.

Staff and residents worked all day preparing a holiday meal many there would normally be without.

"I've come to Pikeville and ended up in the homeless shelter, and I've met a lot of great people. They've helped me quite a bit, and I'm really thankful for this one," said shelter resident John Ruth.

But there is something they all say is more special to them than turkey and dressing.

"We're giving people that don't have a family a family, and it's not just a homeless shelter to me it's an actual family," said shelter resident Leann Mullins.

Many of the residents say they have become like family to each other, and they are thankful to be able to spend a holiday meal with the people they care about.

"I didn't have much family where I came from, so this is a great experience," said Ruth.

They say they are using this day to come together and be thankful for having each other.

"I love it. I love being with them. They're good people," said Olcott.

People at the shelter say they are also thankful for all the food donated to them this past week.
