VIRGIE, Ky. (WYMT) - The disorder is so rare that an Eastern Kentucky family has been told they are the only ones in the world battling it.

Toni Cable, her two sons and her husband appeared as any other family enjoying New Year's Day on Tuesday.

"We try to just, you know, be normal, but it's hard," said Toni.

It is hard because Toni and 3-year-old Dalson are living with a rare gene mutation.

The mutation is linked to leukemia, and what's worse, it seems to run in their family. Toni says so far seven of her family members have been diagnosed with the mutation, and five of them have developed into leukemia including two of her uncles who lost their lives to the disease and her father.

"It's changed our lives, because you can't function, you know. It's always there," she said, adding that doctors have told them they are the only family documented with this particular mutation.

The family says everything they have dealt with in the past year has really taken its toll on them, so much so that they are now in danger of losing their home.

"If somebody had told me six months ago that I would be where I am today, I would never have believed it. We were just a typical family. My husband worked every day. You know we worked every day," Toni said.

But now she says regular doctor visits and taking care of her father has left them with no choice but to hope for a miracle as doctors try to understand a disorder they say is a mystery.

"Mental and physical exhaustion is what it's been for all of us," she said.

A fund has been set up to help the family. Donations can be made at any U.S. Bank for the Tackett Family FPD/AML Organization.
