PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Several areas of Pike County are dealing with snow from the storm system.

People say they heard it was coming but were still surprised to see it arrive.

It certainly looks like Hurricane Sandy has arrived in the Big Sandy. The snow has been falling since Monday afternoon in some places and is expected to continue throughout most of the day Tuesday.

It is catching a lot of people off guard including snow plow drivers.

"It's just a fluke snowstorm I believe. I'm hoping anyway," said plow driver Jason Little.

This weather is being called unprecedented for October in Eastern Kentucky, and a main concern is keeping people safe on the roads.

"Watch out for snow plows. A lot of people try to pass the trucks while we're plowing, and the snow can hit their vehicle and make it slide out of control," said Little.

Especially in those higher elevations in Pike County around areas like Dorton...and along the Virginia/West Virginia borders.

Some of the places reporting the highest amounts of snow are around Phelps, Dorton, and Virgie. There are also a few reports in Elkhorn City and South Williamson.

Transportation officials are asking people to drive in the passing lane in snowy areas because that is the lane the plows clear first.
