Pike Co. superintendent resigns

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The Pike County superintendent is resigning effective August 1.

The board voted at Tuesday's meeting to accept Superintendent Roger Wagner's voluntary resignation.

The motion passed three to two, but some board members were not pleased with the decision to wait until August.

"I want that date effective immediately, and the reason why I say that is if you look at the shape that our children are in test score wise, we are in the bottom 18 percentile in the state," said Board Member Justin Maynard.

Wagner defended the test scores, saying there is room to improve but low scores cannot be blamed on one person.

"I have no regrets. Pike County has been very very good to me. For a boy to come from a head of a hollow and be able to achieve and move on and make a difference in people's lives, I'm pretty proud of that," Wagner responded.

Wagner has worked for Pike County Schools for more than 40 years.
