PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The Pike County Highway Safety Team received national recognition for their 'Drive Down' initiative.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between many in the county including East Kentucky Broadcasting, law enforcement, fire departments, the court system, health department officials, the transportation cabinet, and many more.
From April 2012 to April 2013, the campaign saw 382 fewer crashes than the previous year.
Officials say this is one of the greatest decreases in crashes ever reported by a single county.
Highway District 12 Information Officer, Sara George says, "Bottom line is drivers in Pike County are paying attention, drivers in Pike County have decided we are no longer going to be the most dangerous county in Kentucky. We've all looked at ourselves in the mirror and we've all tried to improve our driving behaviors."
'Drive Down' will be presented with the Peter K O'Rourke Special Achievement award in San Diego at the National Governors Highway Safety Association's annual meeting.
