PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Some students in Pike County received an extended summer break after school officials delayed the opening of the newly formed Valley Elementary.
The school is a consolidated Virgie Middle, G.F. Johnson Elementary, and Robinson Creek Elementary Schools.
Now, final preparations for the district's newest and largest school are underway.
The school is buzzing with excitement and last minute touch-ups . Principal Freddie Bowling says, "We were fortunate to get the start date pushed back three days which gave us some breathing room. It is a state of the art facility, a very nice school, and we want the students and parents to see it in its best form."
The main reason for delaying the start of school, eachers say they were waiting on desks for their classrooms.
Heather Ratliff says, "Our technology was ready to go, we were ready to go, we had meetings on Monday and Tuesday not knowing if we would get the furniture by Wednesday or not. We did have to postpone...but we've been ready for a long time."
In fact, teachers say this move is something they have been working on since learning about the consolidation three years ago. They say as this project grew before the communities eyes..so did the excitement.
"Parents have wanted to come in...they were like when can we have open house? It is because they've been building this for 3 years, and people who go to this school drive by here everyday and they could see the progress being made up on the hill," explains Ratliff.
Valley Elementary is now the largest school in the district both in size and number of students with more than 1,000 kids enrolled to attend the school this year.
Principal Bowling says when those students walk into the new building, "I think the kids will be overwhelemed...all big eyed and excited."
Which is exactly what the staff says they want to see, because they say this school is what their students and community deserves.
Valley Elementary will be hosting an open house both Thursday and Friday evening from 5:00 - 7:00.
Students will begin classes monday morning.
