PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Pikeville High School received a unique honor from special guests from Frankfort.
Officials with the Kentucky Environmental Education Council presented a banner to congratulate the school on becoming only the eight in the state, certified as a 'Green and Healthy School'.
Teacher Kelly Scott was also honored as the Kentucky Green and Healthy Schools Teacher of the Year. Scott is the first teacher to receive the award. Officials say she has created a very strong green and healthy program at the school by implementing the program into her curriculum.
Executive Director Elizabeth Schmitz says, "I am really proud to have students who are taking such positive actions to help their school and community. I've heard stories how the efforts here at Pikeville High School have rippled out to the community and now more businesses are recycling and I think it is exciting for students to be such powerful agents of change."
Schmitz and other officials toured the school, learning about some of the student's projects...including the greenhouse they installed last year.
