PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - A major announcement for healthcare in the mountains on Thursday. Pikeville Medical Center and Mayo Clinic officials announced a collaboration to connect doctors with Mayo Clinic specialists.
The announcement made at a news conference is one that hospital President/CEO Walter E. May calls the most important announcement in the hospital's history.
The announcement introduced Pikeville Medical Center as the latest member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, that is made up of hospitals from across the united states as well as in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
May says, "I would rate this above national hospital of the year because that gave us recognition for what we had done, this announcement will tell you what we will become and we will become much better because of this."
Officials say the network provides teamwork among hospitals by allowing the Mayo Clinic to share any new initiatives, tools, or knowledge with Pikeville Medical Center.
Dr. Stephen Lange with the Mayo Clinic Care Network explains, "Breakthrough research will be available right here in this community and less people will have to travel to get answers to their complex questions."
Officials say this will allow the hospital to continue to grow and become even greater.
Pamela Todd May says, "Tomorrow we will be back to work and the bar will be higher than today." As they remain committed to providing the highest level of care to the region.
With this announcement Pikeville Medical Center becomes one of 18 members from around the world that make up the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
