Santa Train rolls through Kentucky

Updated: Sat 10:49 PM, Nov 17, 2012

ELKHORN CITY, Ky. (WYMT) - Christmas came early for kids in Eastern Kentucky this weekend.

The Santa Train rolled into town and kids could not wait to see what Saint Nicholas would bring.

Families lined up in Shelbiana as early as 5:30 Saturday morning.

The train made 14 stops in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee to give out nearly 15 tons of gifts for children and families.

Not only did Santa himself throw goodies from the train, but his helpers passed out items like stuffed bags for children of all ages and even wrapping paper.

This is the 70th annual ride through the Appalachian Mountains, and for many it is a family tradition.

“It started out that we would just go to Elkhorn city; then as we got older we would come to Shelby; then we would hit just as many stops as we can just following the train,” said Chris Anderson of Jenkins.

CSX officials said it is part of their job they were happy to do.

“Seeing the little kids that enjoy Santa so much and believe in the spirit of Christmas and seeing maybe some kids that otherwise maybe wouldn't have a gift,” said Carla Groleau.

The last stop was in Kingsport, Tennessee, where country group Thompson Square performed and officials held a parade.

All to ensure that everyone has a little holiday cheer.
